EXHIBITION ON MATILDA OF CANOSSA REGGIO EMILIA Matilda of Canossa, the Duchy Treasure, Castles and Parish Curches exhibition in Reggio Emilia, 1 day tour History, Gastronomy and the Great Po River.
Day dedicated to the discovery of historical and cultural events regarding the Countess Matilda of Canossa’s life showed at the “Matilda and the Canossa’s treasure among castles and cities” exhibition in Reggio Emilia. For the first time , an exhibition presents 215 works able to recall the influence and the power as well as the historical events of the Countess’s life such as the Council of 1106 in Guastalla and the meeting among Matilda, Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV at the Castello di Canossa in 1077. This exhibit enables you to analyse the political events as well as the cultural, religious and architectural ones related to Matilda of Canossa, such as the establishment of several parish churches and Cathedrals, literary texts, manuscript illumination and painted and sculpted images. It is the first time that a global analysis of the policy as well as of the art and architecture of the Mathilda’s age is done supposing a possible link with the territorial planning elaborated by the Canossa and the papacy in those years. Matilda of Canossa dedicated her whole life to her lands, handing us down this love for our traditions and for the lands we live in, crating a State with a continental relevance. Matilda died on the 24th July 1115 in Bondeno di Rancore and she was buried in the monastery of San Benedetto in Polirone. In 1632, her body was moved to Rome, in the Basilica di San Pietro, because of her power and her magnanimity. She lies in a sarcophagus decorated with an extraordinary monument of the Bernini. Matilda is the only woman that lies in the Basilica di San Pietro. Few other women played a so important role in the European history.
